Normal Is Not the Goal

The power of “the average” is great. You are told not to be low energy (depressed) or high energy (ADHD, manic) but to be in the middle: the norm. You are also told not to be too relational (codependent or love addict), too single (avoidant), or too sexually driven and sexually confident (sex addict). Don’t be too old (antiaging, always!) or too young (immature), or too fat or too skinny. We don’t allow anyone to just be okay as they are. All this behavior involves seeking approval, because our culture demands it. Instead, go the opposite route! Choose the radical act of liking yourself as you are, and don’t trade authenticity for approval.
